Primus, the famous alternative metal band, has a new drummer named John Hoffman. Hoffman, who is from Shreveport, Louisiana, was chosen after the band received over 6,200 applications. He's the eighth drummer to join Primus, taking over after Tim "Herb" Alexander left.

John Hoffman's love for drumming started when he was very young. He began playing drums at just two years old and had his first performance at four. Hoffman's father was also a musician, which influenced him greatly. By 17, he was already touring nationally with various bands. Hoffman recently played in a band called Dirtfoot, which has a unique sound they describe as "Gypsy Punk Country Grumble Boogie." He also gained attention by sharing fun drumming videos on social media, where he played TV show theme songs like Reading Rainbow and Inspector Gadget among others.

Primus searched worldwide for their new drummer, looking for the "greatest drummer on Earth." They received submissions from all over and held final auditions called the "Interstellar Drum Derby." Famous drummers like Thomas Pridgen and Nikki Sixx were among the finalists. Hoffman's audition video, which showed him playing "John the Fisherman," impressed the band with his timing and chemistry. After careful consideration, Primus invited Hoffman to Los Angeles to meet with band members Les Claypool and Larry "Ler" LaLonde. Hoffman thanked his wife for her support and acknowledged the other talented drummers who auditioned.

Primus is preparing for their Sessanta v2.0 North American tour and a performance at Tool's Live in the Sand event in the Dominican Republic on March 8, 2025. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how this new member will enhance Primus' unique sound. John Hoffman's path to joining Primus shows his talent and dedication. As he starts this new chapter with one of rock's most unique bands, fans can expect exciting things from Primus' future.
