A San Antonio Band with a Family Soul and Pop-Rock Heart

(Artist Report)

Written by: Ginny Gaines

Hacienda isn't your typical Texas band. Coming from San Antonio, this four-piece outfit blends a sophisticated brand of pop music with tight harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles and Beach Boys. Their sound, infused with a touch of Mexican-American heritage, has gained them a loyal following and the attention of industry giants. Hacienda's story begins not in a smoky bar or a bustling rehearsal space, but in a supportive family environment. Brothers Abraham (piano/vocals), Rene (bass/vocals), and Jaime Villanueva (drums/vocals), grew up surrounded by music. Along with their cousin Dante Schwebel (guitar/vocals), they honed their musical skills, drawn to the classic sounds of the 1960s and 70s – The Beatles, Beach Boys, and the undeniable spirit of pop, soul, and blues.

Fate intervened when the band, fueled by early creative fire, recorded a six-song demo. This seemingly simple act propelled them into a whirlwind of change. The demo landed in the hands of none other than Dan Auerbach, the Grammy-winning musician best known for his work with The Black Keys. Auerbach, impressed by their raw talent and captivating sound, became their unlikely champion. Auerbach's involvement proved instrumental. Hacienda signed with his label, Dine Alone Records, and with his production expertise, they embarked on recording their debut album.

In 2008, Hacienda released their album titled Loud is the Night. This album has 14 tracks on it that include "She's Got A Hold On Me," "Useless and Tired," "Here Me Crying," "Shake Ya," "Where The Waters Roam," "Baby Don't Go," and "Wishbone." This helped them gain exposure. They released their next album Big Red And Barbacoa. This album has 12 tracks on it that include "Who's Heart Are You Breaking," "Younger Days," "Big Red," "You're My Girl," "Mama's Cookin," and "Barbacoa." This album helped them continue to build their fanbase.

The band released their next album titled Shake down in 2012. This album has 10 songs on it that include "Veronica," "Let Me Go," "Don't Keep Me Waiting," "Don't You Ever," and "Pilot In The Sky." This album showcased their strengths – tight harmonies, awesome lyrics, and a melody-driven sound that resonated with audiences beyond San Antonio. Auerbach's production added a layer of polish to Hacienda's sound, but at its core remained the band's signature blend of pop melodies, soulful piano, and driving rock grooves.

Hacienda's success extends beyond album sales and critical acclaim. They've cultivated a dedicated fan base through their energetic live shows. Their ability to connect with audiences on a personal level, combined with their infectious music, creates a truly immersive experience. The band is also known for its commitment to their local community, frequently participating in charity events and fostering a sense of togetherness at their shows. Their Mexican-American heritage continues to subtly influence their sound, adding a unique flavor to their songwriting and sonic palette.

In April 2024, the band released their latest album titled Oaxaca Sun. This album has 12 tracks on it that include "As Sure As The Stars," "Don't Tell me It's Raining," "Eggs And Toast," "Cryin' Next Door," "Keep Me Running," and "Gonna Make You Live." This album has been well received. Hacienda is a band that thrives on live performance. Their stage presence is both energetic and engaging. The Villanueva brothers' tight harmonies and Schwebel's skillful guitar work combine to create an amazing experience for fans. Their live shows are intimate affairs, fostering a connection with the audience that transcends the music.

Hacienda represents the vibrant spirit of San Antonio, a city with a rich musical heritage, proving that success can be found by staying true to your roots and creating music that resonates with the soul. They've made their mark in the music industry with their songwriting, tight musicianship, and charismatic stage presence. With each new album, they continue to evolve, pushing boundaries while staying true to their unique sound. As they embark on the next chapter of their musical path, one thing is certain: Hacienda is a band to watch, a force poised to leave a lasting mark on the world of pop music.
