Today we take a virtual visit to Charleston, South Carolina where we dive into this story. 87 Nights, a rock band composed of College of Charleston alumni, has quickly risen from humble beginnings to become a notable name in the Southeast music scene. The band, consisting of Zane Acord (vocals), Johnny Holliday and Preston Johnson (guitar), Mac Dickson (drums), and Shane McCoy (bass), was formed in a small practice room at 87 Morris Street, where the members spent countless nights honing their craft.

The year 2017 marked a significant turning point for 87 Nights. Initially experimenting with various instruments and covers of popular songs, the band received an opportunity to perform at The Music Farm in Charleston. This performance pushed them to refine their skills, write original music, and solidify their lineup. The band name, inspired by their practice location, symbolizes their dedication and late-night jam sessions.

87 Nights' first original song, “I Ain’t Your Man,” showcases their distinctive sound, blending modern blues with rock influences. This track has garnered over 500,000 plays on Spotify, highlighting the band’s growing popularity. Their music emphasizes melody and rhythm, often prioritizing instrumentation over lyrics to create an energetic and engaging sound. Their recording process captures the live energy of their performances, adding authenticity to their tracks.

In 2019, 87 Nights embarked on a tour across the Southeast, facilitated by Luke Washburn and Atlas Touring. Their self-titled album, recorded at Coast Records, was released the same year. The band’s single, “Know Yourself,” presented new challenges particularly with recording techniques. Nevertheless the crew overcame and released this song to Spotify on March 27, 2020.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed significant challenges for 87 Nights, as it did most bands and businesses across the globe. The band members of 87 Nights were scattered across the East Coast. Despite these obstacles, they continued to collaborate remotely, sharing voice memos and working on new material on the fly. This period of separation allowed the members to grow individually and bring fresh ideas to the group.

March 4, 2022 would be the next time the digital would would hear from 87 Nights when the band released their single “Hollywood” to Spotify. Showing a different blend of rock with a sound reminiscent of the 50s blended with modern rock vocal melodies. A short time later on August 5th, the boys released their second single for 2022 “Make You Mad.” The hard hitting track gives the raw punk rock garage rock vibe with tones that will bring you back to The Stokes.

We reached out to 87 Nights to see what the they have been up to. The band has taken a break from the road with no upcoming tour plans. However they do perform festivals, events and maintain a active status in the South Carolina music scene. It was not clear when the next release will be coming, we will keep in contact with 87 Nights and bring you any updates that come our way.
