"The Boys From Austin, Texas"

The Strange Boys were an American rock band from Austin, Texas, that formed in 2001. The band is known for its mix of garage rock, punk, blues, and psychedelic influences. They founding members were Ryan Sambol (vocals, guitar) and his brother Philip Sambol (bass). The initial lineup included Greg Enlow (guitar) and Matt Hammer (drums). The band members were still in high school when they started playing together, drawing inspiration from a wide range of musical genres including 1960s garage rock, blues, and punk.

The Strange Boys’ music is characterized by its raw, unpolished sound that harkens back to the garage rock era of the 1960s. Their songs often feature jangly guitars, straightforward drumming, and Ryan Sambol's distinctive, somewhat nasally vocal delivery. The band's influences include iconic acts like The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, and The 13th Floor Elevators. They also incorporate elements of R&B and country into their music, creating a unique and diverse sound.

In 2007, the band released their debut EP titled Nothing. This EP has 4 tracks on it that include "Happily In Disbelief" and "We Both Know". In 2009, the trio released their debut album, And Girls Club, on In the Red Records. This album has 16 songs on it that include "Woe Is You And Me," "This Girl Taught Me A Dance," "Poem Party," "A Man You've Never None," and "Death And All The Rest." The album was well-received by critics, who praised its throwback sound and high energy.

Around 2009, The Strange Boys underwent some line-up changes. Drummer and founding member Matt Hammer stepped aside, making way for Seth Densham (formerly of Mika Miko). Jenna Thornhill-DeWitt, another Mika Miko alum, joined as saxophonist and backing vocalist. Meanwhile, Tim Presley (from Darker My Love) contributed backing vocals. Their chemistry was electric. During this time, the band also signed with Rough Trade, a UK record label.

The Strange Boys released their second album in 2010 titled Be Brave. This album has 12 tracks that include "A Walk On The Beach," "Friday In Paris," "All You Can Hide Inside," and "You Can't Only Love When You Want To." This album marked a significant step forward for the band. Released on Rough Trade Records, the album featured more polished production and showcased the band's growth as songwriters. The title track "Be Brave" became one of their most popular songs, with its infectious rhythm and memorable chorus and Dell even used it in a commercial in 2012.

In 2011, the band released their third album titled Live Music. This album has 14 songs on it that include "Me And You," "Walking Two By Two," "Over The River And Through The Woods," and "Hidden Meanings, Soul Graffiti." This album further solidified their place in the indie rock scene. Despite its title, Live Music is a studio album that captures the energy of their live performances. Songs like "Me and You" and "Omnia Boa" highlight the band's ability to craft engaging, energetic rock tunes with a vintage feel.

The Strange Boys toured alongside acts like Darker My Love, Night Beats, and Spoon. But all good things must come to an end. According to singer Ryan Sambol, their last show took place in Canada in July 2012. The band announced an indefinite hiatus. Ryan Sambol pursued a solo career, releasing several albums that continued to explore the mix of genres that defined The Strange Boys’ music.

The Strange Boys may not have enjoyed a long career, but their influence on the rock music landscape is undeniable. Their unique blend of garage rock, punk, blues, and psychedelic sounds set them apart from their contemporaries and earned them a dedicated following. As the members continue to pursue individual projects, the spirit of The Strange Boys lives on in their music and the countless bands they have inspired.
