Leopold and his Fiction

"today we delve into the story of The band, Leopold and his Fiction."

Hello to the incredible SoundWave community. Thank you for joining us today as we dive into the story of the band, Leopold and his Fiction.

This all got started with Guitarist, Vocalist, and driving force behind the entire project, Daniel Leopold. Born in Detroit, Michigan, a young mind would develop out of lost basement instruments and grow into a brilliantly poetic artist with some grit. He found his way to California and started writing songs; with this began his music career.

2005 saw the first groundbreaking release, self-titled “Leopold and his Fiction.” On January 1st, 2006, the album was released to hundreds of major music platforms and shops. This album served as a debut for Leopold and his Fiction and was followed up by the band's first massive campaign, taking the main stages at festivals with new-age rock stars Dr. Dog and Gary Clark Jr. Leopold even had the honor of sharing the stage with the legend from Texas, ZZ Top. It may come as a surprise to some, but this musical campaign was a great success.

The crew released their next record in 2009, titled “Ain't No Surprise,” and this album is a testament to the true lyrical creativity that lives inside Daniel Leopold, telling tales and stories through his songwriting. Spinning up a buzz with their edgy blend of music, many publications gave glowing reviews, with NPR in 2009 comparing the sound to The Who.

The band's 3rd album titled “3” was released in 2012; however, this would not be their Final Cut. It was sometime between 2009 and 2012 that Daniel co-founded the side project “Cowboy and Indian.” This became his main focus for a while, shortly after the release and tour for “3.” In an interview with “Sonic Guild,” Daniel states the facts that he had never stopped working on Leopold and his Fiction, but that he felt the need to be more focused elsewhere. It wasn’t that Leopold ever stopped, but it was clearly imperative that this other project, and these other people, needed him as much as he needed them.

After relocating to the great city of Austin, Texas, Daniel began penning around some new ideas. Inevitably, he couldn’t fight the fiction and began writing a new album. This time was different as the songs came together with a natural ease and impact, compelling Daniel to make his full return to Leopold and his Fiction. In 2017, the crew released the album “Darling Destroyer” and recaptured their audience with a bigger rock and roll sound with more grit and soul.

“Darling Destroyer” stands up as some of the band's most successful work to date, with the major success of the song “I'm Caving In” reaching 1.4 million plays on Spotify. The band toured with this album until 2020. Yes, and in 2020, we saw the release of a 3-track single titled “It's How I Feel,” featuring new versions of songs from “Darling Destroyer.”

Daniel Leopold began working on a new project with artist Jane Ellen Bryant, “Jane Leo,” described as “Art Pop.” Lyrically, this project touches on the mental landscape of the modern day. Although we would like to see nothing more than the return of Leopold and his Fiction to the world of rock and roll, we are happy to see Daniel Leopold still creating, and at the end of the day, we know the culture of rock and roll will bring him home eventually. Perhaps his next album release will be coming in the future. There have been no statements made about a return or an end; we can only assume from past history that the fans will see a return.
