Illiterate Light are from Harrisonburg, Virginia, has ignited the indie rock scene with their high energy, unconventional instrumentation, and exciting live performances. Jeff Gorman and Jake Cochran make the duo. They met while attending college in Harrisonburg, Virginia. They bonded over a shared love for music and a desire to create something unique. Before forming Illiterate Light, the duo played in various local bands and engaged in experimental musical projects, perfecting their skills and developing their artistic vision. Their experiences as musicians in the vibrant Virginia music scene played a crucial role in shaping their sound and approach to music.

In 2015, Gorman and Cochran decided to form Illiterate Light, drawing inspiration from their diverse musical influences and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of traditional rock music. The name "Illiterate Light" itself reflects their desire to shed conventional norms and illuminate their musical path with creativity and innovation. Illiterate Light's music is characterized by its mix of genres and a penchant for experimentation. Their sound is a fusion of indie rock, folk, psychedelia, and even elements of electronic music. This diverse sound allows them to create songs that are both familiar and refreshingly original. One of the defining features of their music is the dynamic interplay between Gorman's multi-instrumental talents and Cochran's inventive drumming.

Jeff Gorman's role in the band is particularly noteworthy. He often plays both the guitar and bass simultaneously, using a setup that allows him to switch between instruments seamlessly. This innovative approach not only adds depth to their sound but also showcases their technical skillfulness. Jake Cochran, on the other hand, employs a minimalist yet powerful drumming style, often incorporating electronic elements to enhance the rhythmic complexity of their music. I found it quite interesting that Jake plays on a stand up drum kit while Jeff uses his feet to play a Moog Synthesizer, all the while he is headbanging, singing and playing guitar. How crazy is that!!!!

In 2019, Illiterate Light released their debut self titled album. This album has 12 songs on it that include "In The Ground," "Better Than I Used To," "Wish I didn't Have Any Problems," "Sometimes Love Takes So Long," "Here Lie The Bones Of My Favorite Car," and "American Boy." This album serves as a showcase of their sound and lyrical depth. Tracks like "Better Than I Used To" and "Sometimes Love Takes So Long" exemplify their ability to blend lyrics with melodies, creating songs that resonate on both an emotional and musical level.

The duo released a live 7 song album titled In The Moment: Illiterate Light Live in 2020. Some tracks for this album include "Thank You Too," "Nuthin's Fair," and "Vampire Blues." This release was very well received by their fanbase. In 2023, Illiterate Light released their next album titled Sunburned. This album has 9 songs on it that include "Wake Up Now," "Light Me Up," "Fuck LA," and "Luckiest Man Alive." Spin Magazine thought this was one of 2023's best albums. This album also helped the band to expand their fanbase.

In addition to their studio recordings, Illiterate Light is known for their amazing live performances. Their shows are characterized by high energy and a deep connection with the audience. The duo's ability to recreate their complex studio sound in a live setting is a testament to their musicianship and stage presence. Illiterate Light has made a significant impact on the indie rock scene, earning a reputation as one of the most innovative and exciting bands of their generation. Their willingness to experiment with different genres and push the boundaries of traditional rock music has earned them critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.

With their unique sound, captivating live performances, and a growing fanbase, Illiterate Light is poised for continued success. Their ability to experiment and evolve while staying true to their core identity is a testament to their artistry and resilience. As they continue to tour and release new music, the future looks bright for this dynamic duo. Illiterate Light's journey is a testament to the power of creativity, perseverance, and a willingness to push boundaries. Their music is a refreshing antidote to the often predictable nature of the contemporary music landscape, and their impact on the indie rock scene is undeniable.

The duo released an EP titled Slow Down Time in March 2024. This EP has 5 tracks on it that include "Paint The Town" and "Killer Not A Lover". Is s new album in the works?
