"Riding the Cosmic Wave out of Portland, Oregon" (New album dropped Friday May 17,2024)"
Blitzen Trapper is an American alternative country band based in Portland, Oregon. Formed in 2000, the band's current members are Eric Earley (guitar/harmonica/vocals/keyboard), Brian Adrian Koch (drums/vocals/harmonica), Michael Elson (bass/keyboard), and Nathan Vanderpool (guitar/vocals); at some shows, Michael Blake fills in for Vanderpool. Known for their creative sound that blends rock, folk, and psychedelic music, Blitzen Trapper has left their mark on music with their two-plus decades of making music.
Blitzen Trapper began as a group of friends who shared a love for music and played together in various positions before solidifying their lineup. When the band first formed in 2000, they called themselves Garmonbozia. In 2003, the group changed their name to Blitzen Trapper. They self-released their first three albums, starting with their self-titled debut in 2003, which showcased their experimental sound and DIY spirit.
Eric Earley, the band's primary songwriter and creative force, grew up in the Pacific Northwest, which heavily influenced the band's music. His storytelling often reflects the natural beauty and ruggedness of the region. The band's early work was marked by the blending of various genres in a way that felt organic and unpolished. This period was crucial for developing their unique sound and identity.
The band's breakthrough came with their third album, "Wild Mountain Nation," in 2007. This record received widespread acclaim for its genre-defying mix of Americana, rock, and folk. Songs like the title track "Wild Mountain Nation" and "Sci-Fi Kid" displayed a freewheeling, adventurous spirit that caught the attention of critics and listeners alike. The album's success led to a deal with Sub Pop Records, a label known for its roster of influential indie bands. "Wild Mountain Nation" established Blitzen Trapper as a band to watch in the indie music world.
In 2008, Blitzen Trapper released "Furr," their first album on Sub Pop. The album was a success, with the title track becoming one of their signature songs. "Furr" showcased the band's storytelling skills and musical versatility, blending elements of classic rock, folk, and psychedelic rock. The album was recorded by the Willamette River, in an old telegraph building in Portland, Oregon. The album's themes of maturity and nature resonated with listeners, earning it a place on "best of" lists.
The band released their album titled "Destroyer of the Void" in 2010. This release was an ambitious project, incorporating elements of progressive rock and fancy pop. The album's complicated arrangements and diverse influences showcased the band's skillfulness. Songs like "Heaven and Earth" and the title track "Destroyer of the Void" featured their talent and growth, further cementing the band's reputation for innovation.
Blitzen Trapper released their next album, "American Goldwing." This album was a bit different from their previous one. It leaned heavily into classic rock, drawing comparisons to bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, and The Band. The album was characterized by its driving guitars, sentimental lyrics, and a hint of Americana. Tracks like "Love the Way You Walk Away" and "Fletcher" exemplified this shift, blending soulful melodies with rootsy, rock-driven arrangements.
The group toured throughout 2012 promoting their "American Goldwing" album, playing at festivals and many other venues. In 2013, they released their next album, "VII," on Vagrant Records. The album featured standout tracks like "Thirsty Man" and "Shine On," which highlighted their ability to fuse disparate genres into a collective sound. The record was a testament to their willingness to take risks and push their creative boundaries.
Their next album release came in 2015, titled "All Across This Land." Songs from this album include "Rock And Roll (Was Made For You)," "Lonesome Angel," and "Cadillac Road." In 2016, Blitzen Trapper released their live album titled "Live At Third Man Records." The band's ninth album, titled "Wild and Reckless," was released in 2017. Tracks from this album include "Rebel," "Stolen Hearts," and "Dance With Me."
Blitzen Trapper released a 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of their album "Furr" in 2018. This included seven songs that had never before been released. The band released their tenth album, "Holy Smokes Future Jokes," in 2020. This album was positively received for both the songwriting and the lyrical content. The band went on tour off and on throughout 2021 and 2022.
Now, here we are in 2024, and Blitzen Trapper is still rocking! On this past Friday, May 17, they just released their newest album titled "100's of 1,000's, Millions of Billions." This album has 12 songs on it that include "Ain't Got Time To Fight," "Dead God of the Green Arising," "So Divine," and "Long Game."
We will continue to follow Blitzen Trapper and follow up with any new updates.
