"FRiday special We present you The Handlebar in Pensacola, Florida"

If you're a Pensacola native from the 80s or 90s, chances are you've got some memories tied up with The Handlebar. This dive wasn't just a bar; it was the heartbeat of Pensacola's underground music scene. Whether you were there for a big name passing through or just wanted to catch some local talent, The Handlebar was the spot.

Now, when you hear "The Handlebar," you might picture a biker joint. And yeah, there was a bit of that vibe, but it was a place for everyone. You'd find heavy metal heads, punk rockers, pop enthusiasts, folk aficionados, and even country fans all mingling under one roof.

That stage was a launchpad for local acts and touring bands alike. We're talking about names like Run-D.M.C., The Replacements, and Suicidal Tendencies gracing that stage before they hit the big time.

Owned and operated for years by Pensacola natives Sue and Jimmy Lamar III, The Handlebar was more than just a bar. It was a community hub. But tragedy struck in 2001 when a fire shut it down. After a rollercoaster of reopening and eventual closure in 2018, the torch was passed to Kathy Sandstrom and her husband, Chris McKean.

These two are Pensacola through and through, with their own memories tied to The Handlebar. They saw an opportunity to not just flip the place, but to restore it to its former glory. And man, did they deliver.

Gone are the days of warm beer and sketchy bathrooms. Sandstrom and McKean brought in some serious upgrades. We're talking air conditioning, folks. And not just that, but a fresh coat of paint, brand new restrooms (four of them!), and even an updated courtyard for some chill outdoor vibes.

The musical soul of The Handlebar remains untouched. It's still a haven for local talent and up-and-comers. Robert Goodspeed, the general manager, is on a mission to keep that spirit alive. And Sandstrom? She's determined to fill a gap in the scene, giving upcoming bands a place to shine.

But hey, they're not forgetting the old days. They've kept the vibe intact while adding some much-needed polish. It's still The Handlebar, just with a little extra sparkle and with all their hard work and continued persistence, The Handlebar reopened in August 2022.

Since the reopening, The Handlebar has received many great reviews on their atmosphere, music, and drinks alike. They offer all genres of music, from country to alternative and punk. They host singers and song=writters as well. And guess what else they offer? You can rent the venue for events like a wedding shower or even a baby shower! You may contact them on their Facebook page for more information. We are so excited as we will continue to follow this iconic venue known as The Handlebar, and we wish them much continued success!
