Soul, Funk, Rock and Country: Inside the Unique Musical Landscape of Greyhounds

(Artist Report)

Written by: Jake Beach

Emerging from the vibrant music scene of Austin, Texas, the Greyhounds are captivating audiences with their distinctive blend of R&B, soul, and funk fused with the Bakersfield country sound popularized by Buck Owens. The duo, comprised of guitarist Andrew Trube and keyboardist Anthony Farrell, has carved out a niche aptly described as a fusion of "Hall & Oates meets ZZ Top." Their electrifying live performances have showcased their musical prowess and helped them cultivate a dedicated and enthusiastic fan base.

Trube and Farrell embarked on their musical journey together in 1999, a partnership that began when Farrell responded to Trube's advertisement seeking a keyboardist in the Los Angeles Weekly. Their collaboration quickly flourished, leading them to tour and record in various locations before returning to their roots in Tyler, Texas, Trube's hometown. Throughout their travels, they crafted a series of songs that garnered attention, with notable performances by artists such as Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks showcasing their songwriting prowess.

In 2004, they released their full-length album, Liberty, which was conceived in the historic Liberty Hall in downtown Tyler, Texas. This creative endeavor was a collaboration between Trube, Farrell, and drummer Nick Pencis, who all contributed to the songwriting process.
Following their writing sessions at Liberty Hall, the group recorded the album at Truck Farm Studio in New Orleans, Louisiana. Stanton Moore and Robert Mercurio, both members of the acclaimed band Galactic, expertly produced the project. Liberty also featured guest vocal appearances from the talented Ani DiFranco, adding a unique flair to the album.

The album's title, Liberty, pays homage to the significant time they spent at the theater during the writing process, symbolizing the freedom and creativity they experienced there.

In 2009, Greyhounds garnered further recognition when they opened for American Idol winner Taylor Hicks during his tour. As the late 2000s transitioned into the early 2010s, Trube and Farrell took their talents on the road as part of the touring band for JJ Grey & Mofro, further expanding their musical repertoire and audience.

By 2013, their dedication and hard work paid off when they signed a three-album deal with the reformed Ardent Records, marking a significant milestone in their career. Their debut release under Ardent, Accumulator, was unveiled in April 2014, showcasing their evolving sound and artistic vision.

Fast-forward to July 2020, and Greyhounds added another accomplishment to their discography with the release of their eighth album, Primates, under Austin-based Nine Mile Records. This album continued demonstrating their growth as artists and commitment to delivering fresh music to their fans.

In August 2023, Greyhounds made an exciting return with the album Greybird. This collaborative effort brought together the talents of Tim Crane and Sam Patlove from T Bird and the Breaks. This project reflects their ability to adapt and innovate while fostering creative partnerships, keeping their music vibrant and relevant in the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry.
