Austin, Texas, February 15, 1984 — Gary Clark Jr. has emerged as a significant force in the music industry, fusing blues, rock, soul, and hip-hop into his own sound. His journey to musical prominence was pivotal in 2011 when he signed with Warner Bros. Records and released the breakthrough EP, The Bright Lights. This moment began a series of critically acclaimed albums, including Black and Blu (2012) and The Story of Sonny Boy Slim (2015).

Clark is widely recognized for his electrifying live performances, establishing himself as a prolific on-stage artist. This talent is encapsulated in his concert recordings, Gary Clark Jr. Live (2014) and Gary Clark Jr. Live/North America (2017). His exceptional skills were acknowledged with a Grammy Award 2014 for Best Traditional R&B Performance for the heartfelt track "Please Come Home."

Further solidifying his position in the music landscape, Clark won Grammy Awards in 2020 for Best Rock Song and Best Rock Performance with the stirring anthem "This Land." His latest work, JPEG Raw, released in 2024, reflects his ongoing innovation and artistry in contemporary music.

Clark's musical journey began at 13 when he received an Ibanez RX20 guitar as a Christmas gift. Self-taught, he developed his skills through instructional books from the Covington Middle School library while immersing himself in the sounds of influential artists like Green Day, Nirvana, Jimmy Reed, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

His teenage years were marked by small gigs until he caught the attention of Clifford Antone, owner of the legendary Austin music venue Antone's, a club that played a crucial role in launching the careers of blues icons such as Jimmie and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Support from the vibrant Austin music community has been instrumental in shaping Clark's illustrious career.

In 2012, Clark collaborated with Alicia Keys on two tracks, co-writing "Fire We Make" for her album Girl on Fire. The following August, Keys announced via Twitter the imminent release of Clark's debut major-label album, Blak and Blu, which debuted on October 22, 2012. The album succeeded significantly, peaking at number six on the Billboard 200 chart and topping the Blues Albums chart.

Clark's trajectory continued with the 2014 release of his first live album, Gary Clark Jr. Live, a double album recorded during an 18-month tour that garnered favourable reviews. That same year, he collaborated with the Foo Fighters on "What Did I Do? / God as My Witness," featured on their album Sonic Highways, recorded at KLRU-TV Studio 6A in Austin.

From 2015 to 2018, Clark released several notable projects, including The Story of Sonny Boy Slim in 2015. He made guest appearances on Tech N9ne's The Storm. He contributed a guitar solo to Childish Gambino's "The Night Me and Your Mama Met" from the album Awaken, My Love! In 2017, Clark released his second live album, Live North America 2016, collaborated with ZZ Ward on the Cars 3 soundtrack, and covered the Beatles' "Come Together," which became his first charting single on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
Looking ahead to 2019, Clark announced his upcoming album, This Land, which will be released on March 1 via Warner Bros. The title track was accompanied by a music video, and AllMusic later recognized it as a "Favorite Blues Album."
His latest album, JPEG Raw, represents a significant evolution in his artistry. "Blues will always be my foundation," says Clark. "But that's just scratching the surface. I'm also a beat maker and an impressionist who likes to tell stories." He continues, reflecting on the album, "While this is my most honest and vulnerable album about the human condition, it's also the most freeing."
JPEG Raw builds upon the themes explored in This Land yet distinguishes itself as a product of the unprecedented years shaped by global challenges, showcasing Clark's powerful, insightful, and thought-provoking artistry.. Through his innovative approach, he continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music while maintaining his blues roots.
