new single "Solitaires" released on June 12, 2024
(New Release)
The Athens, Georgia band Futurebirds isn't known for dwelling on unhappiness. Their music is a joyous blend of indie rock, folk, and Southern roots, often infused with an optimistic energy that gets crowds moving. However, their latest single, "Solitaires," takes a surprising turn, exploring themes of loneliness and the anxieties of aging with a surprising dose of hope. Released in June 2024 as the lead single for their upcoming album "Easy Company,"(due August 9, 2024), "Solitaires" was inspired by an unexpected source: a social media post. According to co-frontman C.W. King, the song stemmed from a graph he saw on Instagram, depicting a stark correlation between loneliness and age. King, with a touch of self-deprecating humor, has remarked that the post left him feeling a bit down, questioning why he wasted time dwelling on such statistics.
But instead of letting it get him down, King channeled those feelings into a powerful song. "Solitaires" isn't a ballad about despair. Instead, it's a rock n' roll rallying cry against loneliness. Driven by a rhythm section and layered with shimmering guitars, the song pulsates with a determined energy. King's vocals, while acknowledging the sting of loneliness ("What is actually depressing about this whole thing / Is that I am spending any of these fleeting moments / That I have here looking at loneliness graphs on the internet"), ultimately convey a message of hope and resilience.
"Solitaires" isn't just a song by Futurebirds; it's a conversation starter. It compels listeners to confront their own fears of isolation and to actively seek out the connections that make life meaningful. In a world increasingly dominated by digital interaction, the song serves as a reminder of the importance of human connection, a sentiment that resonates deeply in today's age. It's a testament to the band's ability to transform social commentary into a powerful and inspiring piece of music. As they prepare to release "Easy Company," one can't help but feel excited to see where this new chapter in the Futurebirds' story takes flight.
