""From New York City Back Alleys to Indie Rock Darlings""

(Artist Report)

Skaters isn't your typical rock band. Their story, much like their music, is a fascinating blend of premeditated hustle, unexpected connections, and a hint of mystery. Formed in 2012, the band emerged from the vibrant, yet often gritty, underbelly of New York City's music scene. The band's beginnings are quite interesting and intriguing. Michael Cummings, the band's charismatic vocalist, and Christopher "Kid" Rubin, the energetic drummer, began their interactions by sending demos back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean. Cummings, a seasoned musician with a background in other bands, found himself drawn to the energy of Rubin's drumming, captured on recordings sent from London.

Here's where the story takes a fascinating turn. Bring on Joshua Hubbard, a talented guitarist then residing in London. While details are fuzzy, it seems Cummings and Hubbard met at a wild party in Los Angeles, striking up an immediate creative connection. Despite both being in different countries and playing in separate bands at the time, the musical spark was undeniable. Fueled by this newfound connection, Cummings sent demos to Hubbard, and within a short period, the guitarist made a bold move. He booked a flight to New York City the very next day! Upon arrival, with a "let's start a band, let's book shows!" kind of attitude, Hubbard solidified the Skaters' core trio.

The name "Skaters" itself is a curious choice. While some fans might picture the band tearing up skate parks, the truth is far less literal. In interviews, the band members have admitted the name was chosen purely for its cool, youthful vibe, a nod to their shared love for the energy and freedom associated with the skateboarding culture. Very interesting indeed! But, Skaters are all about substance, not just a catchy name. Their music draws heavily from the energy of 70s and 80s punk bands like Mission of Burma, Devo, and The Cars. The band also acknowledges the influence of legendary acts like The Ramones, The Clash, and The Pixies, connecting these influences into a sound that's distinctly their own.

Skaters weren't content to be just another band playing dive bars. They had a plan. Their ambition extended beyond music. They launched their own art magazine, "YONKS," showcasing not only their own work but also the talents of other emerging artists and photographers. This artistic venture became a unique platform for the band, further solidifying their creative identity. This wasn't only an amazing adventure but a tribute to their independence and a desire to assist other artists as well.

In 2014, the band released their debut album titled Manhattan. This album has 11 tracks on it that include "One Of Us," "Miss Teen Massachusetts," "I Wanna Dance (But I Don't Know How)," and "This Much I care." This album was a tribute to their home city, that captures the energy and diversity of New York. The album's production, handled by John Hill, ensured a polished yet edgy sound that resonated with both critics and fans. Skaters released their second album titled Rock and Roll Bye Bye in 2017. This album has 12 songs on it that include "Just Like Your Mother," "Northern Soul," "Mental Case," and "In Your Head." This album continued to help the band build their fan base.

Skaters released two singles in 2023, "Judy Is A Punk (triple j like version)" and "Girls Like You". The story of Skaters is still being written. They are staying true to their punk rock roots. Whether they're captivating audiences with their live shows or churning out catchy indie rock songs, Skaters remain a band to watch. Their journey, from a transatlantic exchange of demos to becoming indie rock darlings, is a testament to raw talent, unwavering ambition, and a touch of that, no holds barred NYC grit.
