"Harmony and Heritage From Toronto, Ontario, Canada"

Elliott Brood, often stylized as Elliott BROOD, is a Canadian band formed in 2002. The band's inception can be traced back to the collaboration between Mark Sasso and Casey Laforet, who initially met at Humber College in Toronto. Their mutual interest in storytelling through music and a shared admiration for roots and folk music laid the foundation for what would become Elliott Brood. The band's name, Elliott Brood, is a pseudonym inspired by Sasso's fascination with the character Elliott from the film "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and the word "brood," which conveys a sense of dark contemplation that often pervades their music.

Mark Sasso gravelly voice and multi-instrumental talent are central to the band's signature sound. His ability to convey raw emotion through his music has been a driving force behind the band's success. Casey Laforet versatility and innovative approach to instrumentation complement Sasso's contributions. His use of bass pedals and keys adds depth and texture to the band's arrangements. Stephen Pitkin joined the band in 2005, bringing a dynamic rhythmic foundation that enhanced their live performances and recordings. His incorporation of a sampler added an experimental edge to their traditional sound.

In 2005, Elliott Brood released their first album titled Ambassador. This album has 12 songs on it that include "Twill," "Second Son," "What Would You Have Me Believe," and "Superior." This album garnered critical acclaim and established them as a significant force in the Canadian music scene. These songs highlight their narrative depth and musical diversity. The band actually named this album after the Ambassador Bridge which connects Windsor, Ontario, Canada to Detroit, Michigan in the United States.

The album titled Mountain Meadows, the bands second album was released in 2008. This album has 13 tracks that include "Fingers and Tongues," "Write It All Down For You," Woodward Avenue," "The Body," and "Miss You Know." This album marked a turning point for Elliott Brood, earning them a Juno Award nomination. This album dives into historical themes, inspired by the 1857 Mountain Meadows massacre in Utah. The album's rich storytelling and expansive soundscapes are evident in tracks the band included.

In 2010, Elliott Brood wrote the song "West End Sky" for the movie Grown Up Movie Star. They signed with the record label Paper Bag Records in 2011 and released their third album titled Days Into Years. This album has 10 songs on it that include "Lindsey," "If I Get Old," "My Mother's Side," and "Their Will." This album was influenced by visits to World War I Étaples Military Cemetery. It explores themes of memory, loss, and legacy. This album also exemplifies the band's ability to blend historical reflection with personal thought.

In 2013, their album Days Into Years won this prestigious Juno award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year. The band released an EP titled Tin Type II. This EP has 9 tracks on it that include "Bowling Green," "Edge Of Town," "Riding In Time," and "Cranes." Elliott Brood released their next album titled Work and Love in 2014. This album has 9 songs on it that include "Little One," "Tired," "Jigsaw Heart," and "End Of The Day." This album was well received and helped the band continue to grow their fan base.

In 2017, the band released their next album titled Ghost Gardens. This album has 11 tracks on it that include "'Til The Sun Comes Up Again," "Dig A Hole," "Thin Air," and "For the Girl." This album revisits some unfinished songs from their early days, infusing them with new energy and perspective. The album's title refers to abandoned gardens that continue to grow, symbolizing resilience and renewal. They released their next album titled Keeper in 2020. This album has 10 songs on it that include "Bird Dog," "No Way Out," "Oh Me," and "The Coast." This album is a testament to the band's enduring relevance and creativity.

Elliott Brood released their next album titled Town in 2023. This album has 8 tracks on it that include "Rose City," "Paper Money," and "Rise Up With Fists." This album reminds us that sometimes in life we go through dark times and storms but not to forget there is always hope and light at the end of the tunnel. In 2024, the band released their album titled Country. This album has 8 songs on it that include "Wind and Snow," "C'mon Let's Go," and "Postcard Pretty." They released another album in 2024 as well. This album is titled Town and Country. It is a combination of the two previously released albums.

Elliott Brood is renowned for their energetic and engaging live performances. Their concerts are a blend of musical virtuosity and storytelling, often involving audience participation. They have toured extensively across North America and Europe, earning a reputation as a must-see live act. Notable performances include appearances at major festivals such as SXSW, Glastonbury, and the Calgary Folk Music Festival. Their ability to captivate diverse audiences is a testament to their broad appeal and musical skills.

Elliott Brood's journey from their humble beginnings in Toronto to becoming a celebrated name in alternative country music is a testament to their talent, innovation, and passion. Their unique sound, compelling storytelling, and unforgettable live performances have earned them a dedicated fan base and critical acclaim.
