a look into Jack White's Supergroup
(Artist Report)
Written by: Jake Beach
The Dead Weather is an American super group that hails from Nashville, Tennessee. Formed by Jack White, a founding member of The White Stripes and a musical innovator, the band includes Alison Mosshart (of The Kills and Discount), Dean Fertita (from Queens of the Stone Age, Karen O, and Iggy Pop), and Jack Lawrence (of The Greenhornes, The Raconteurs, and Karen O). Their debut performance took place on March 11, 2009, at the opening of the Third Man Records headquarters in Nashville. The group's sound is characterized by a powerful mix of blues and garage rock, infused with psychedelic and alternative rock elements.
The roots of The Dead Weather began during a tour with The Raconteurs, when Jack White lost his voice. He invited Alison Mosshart, who was touring with them, to step in and perform some songs. She took the lead on tracks like "Steady as She Goes" and "Salute Your Solution." Inspired by her vocals, White then proposed that she collaborate on a song with him and Jack Lawrence. They were joined by Dean Fertita in the studio, leading to an impromptu session that resulted in multiple recordings that night.
In January 2009, Mosshart, Fertita, Lawrence, and White gathered for an impromptu jam session at White's Third Man studio. This led to two and a half weeks of songwriting and recording, which ultimately formed The Dead Weather. "Things started happening organically," White recalled. "We didn’t have a specific direction. We would create one or two songs each day, recording them as they came to us... There was no time for reflection; it simply was."
The Dead Weather released their debut album, Horehound, on July 14, 2009, in North America and a day earlier, on July 13, in Europe. The album debuted at No. 6 on the U.S. Billboard 200 and No. 14 on the UK Album Charts. On the same day as the North American release, three songs from Horehound—"No Hassle Night," "Hang You from the Heavens," and "Treat Me Like Your Mother"—were made available as downloadable content for the Rock Band video game series. The album debuted at No. 6 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Album Charts and at No. 14 on the UK Album Charts and received favorable reviews from music critics.
. On October 16, 2009, Mosshart said that the second album was "halfway done." White later shared that the first single from this album would be "Die by the Drop," which he would sing. He mentioned that it was "bluesier and heavier than we ever thought we could be." The album, Sea of Cowards, came out in Ireland on May 7, 2010, and then in the U.S. and the U.K. on May 10 and 11, respectively. It reached number five on the Billboard 200 and was ranked eleventh on Rolling Stone's list of the thirty Greatest Albums of 2010. While The dead Weather never officially broke up, they have remained on hiatus since the release of their third album titled Dodge and Burn.
