Georgia Folk Rock

Today we delve into some Georgia folk rock with the band, Cicada Rhythm. It all began in the heart of Georgia, where a talented duo is redefining and modernizing the folk music sound. Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis, collectively known as Cicada Rhythm, are often joined by their crew of Colin Agnew, Matt Stoessel, and Dan Kirslis. The buzz around their names has been growing for years.

Andrea DeMarcus graduated from the Juilliard School of Arts in New York City, honing her skills and sharpening her mind. She explains this experience in an interview with Gypsy Farm Network. Not long after graduation, Andrea met Dave after he hopped off a freight train in her town. Dave then phoned a mutual friend for a ride, and fate would have it that Andrea rode with that mutual friend to pick up Dave. They both look back on the event as love at first sight. In 2011, the couple went on to found Cicada Rhythm.

With their hypnotic melodies and distinctive style, they quickly made a name for themselves. Signing with Normaltown in 2015, they released their debut self-titled album. Their most recent record, “Everywhere I Go,” came out on New West in 2018.

Cicada Rhythm's music captures the essence of the South, blending elements of folk, jazz, and blues. The Citizen-Times in Asheville, NC praises their ability to create "Americana music that feels alive, born out of an experience of the South that includes both new sprawling metropolises and tiny small-town churches, freight trains and taxi cabs, mythic beasts and modern angst."

Creative Loafing in Charlotte, NC describes Cicada Rhythm's music as both haunting and playfully jaunty, crafting an "open-hearted, inventive blend of American musics in deceptively simple songs." Their name itself perfectly reflects their music, conjuring up images of the Southern twilight with the buzz of insects washing through the trees. They capture that eerie yet comforting moment of stasis before the world transforms.

Flagpole in Athens, GA highlights the impact of Cicada Rhythm's music, stating, "The thing that most impresses about Cicada Rhythm's sound is how big it is, even though it's not." With their ringing acoustic guitar, sliding upright bass, and snug harmonies, this Atlanta-based duo's music has a surprising impact that catches listeners off guard.
